Did You Know?

• That lighting typically accounts for 30–50% of a facility’s monthly electrical bill

• Environmental management systems reduce lighting energy consumption from 10–30%

• The savings from installing an EMS typically pays for the system in about two years

Energy management

We know that it is an important objective of the current administration to encourage the growth of clean energy and to promote energy management. However, the focus on energy management is not a new idea. In 2007, executive order 13423 was signed “Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management.” This executive order requires agencies to reduce greenhouse gasses through a reduction in energy intensity of 3% a year or 30% by the end of 2015. Two important goals from this order are:

  • Energy efficiency
The new 30% energy efficiency goal seeks to achieve in 10 years the same level of improvement that Federal agencies achieved in the last 20 years and is 50% more stringent than the goal in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The Federal government improved energy efficiency 29.6% between 1985 and 2005.
  • Buildings
The order makes mandatory the elements of the January 2006 High Performance Buildings MOU signed by 19 agencies. From 1985 to 2005, on average, building energy use decreased 12.9%, or 16.3% energy intensity (Btu/gross sq. ft).

Just released: new wireless lighting control

In April, Eaton announced the launch of their new wireless lighting control. There were a series of webinars that highlighted the features and benefits of the new Pow-R-Command 4000 wireless lighting control. The system was designed to help lower the cost of labor and materials when installing advanced controls that are needed in a robust lighting control system.

Pow-R-Command 3000

The Pow-R-Command Lighting Power Reduction Panel is an energy saving device for use with new or existing fluorescent lighting systems. By conditioning the incoming power wave, it reduces electrical consumption with negligible foot-candle loss at savings up to 15%.

Also, the Pow-R-Command 3000 dramatically reduces the cost of running fluorescent lights without sacrificing lighting quality and can be programmed to selectively curtail after-hours lighting levels for even greater savings.
